Hematite is a powerful grounding stone. Like black tourmaline, it is famous for removing negative energy and for being self-clearing. Polished hematite is a shiny dark grey, with an almost mirror-finish. The unpolished natural stones are dark grey to almost black in color and lumpy in shape. As a powder, or inside a crystal, it presents a red color, which is how it got its name. All the healers I know love and use hematite; it is an extremely hard worker that reminds me of the little engine that could. Hematite can help to clear almost anything! When hematite appears as an inclusion in quartz crystals, they can almost seem like red phantoms. This is the single most popular stone with healers I know. The Crystal Bible 2 sometimes calls this combination “Orange River Quartz,” though the specimens I’ve seen and worked with come across as a deeper red or rust color. Hematite is a great stone to experiment with, because it so obviously works. Grounding, rooting, centering, clearing, these are all tasks that hematite helps to accomplish in remarkable and powerful ways. It also has an almost magnetic sense of pull, for removing negative energy or pain.
